XSEED posted a new CS2 localization update on Facebook.
Translation: 100% complete
Editing: 67% complete (actually a bit higher)
Dub recording will wrap up this month, game is still on track for a 2016 release.
Things are looking great for us right now! In reality, the editing % is a little bit higher; we put a priority on voiced lines in preparation for recording starting next week, so some files with text are only partially edited. We don’t check off a file until it’s well and truly complete, but we’re guessing our actual completion is somewhere around the 73-75% mark.
It feels great to have the game fully translated at this point, as that means we’re still on track for a 2016 launch. And when I say everything is translated, I do mean everything—the story text, everything in the menus, all the graphics, trophies, and even the manual are all translated. Hooray!
Once recording finishes up in March, we’ll be able to move full time with editing, meaning we expect things to go at a quicker pace. If you want to see why recording is so time consuming, well…here’s a screenshot (while it’s a scene early in Trails of Cold Steel II, I highly recommend you beat Trails of Cold Steel before viewing it due to spoilers)!
You have the filename, the Japanese text just in case, the English text for the actors to read, a one/two-word description of the feel of the line, and then the context. You might notice the same notes in multiple context lines or someone else’s lines are written in the context column—this is because actors only see their characters’ lines while everyone else’s lines are filtered out. Having what they’re responding to or why they’re behaving the way they are helps them nail the intended emotion for one line and move on to the next much faster than being forced to read through a script to find their next line. While all of this is very time consuming, we’ve found the results to be absolutely worth it.
And never fear! The one writing these notes (who will also be at the recording) has played and beaten the game four times just to make sure everything is as thorough as it can be, so we’re doing our very best to deliver a stellar English dub full of emotion. Please, wish us luck!
